Yupik's turmeric powder is an exquisite spice obtained from the orange root of Turmeric a plant which is native to South-East Asia. This plant is characterized by yellow funnel-shaped flowers, and an orange root. The root is cleaned, boiled in water, dried under the sun, then grounded into powder.The orange colour is due to the presence of Curcumin in the rhizome at the base of the stem, turmeric’s main active ingredient. Its versatility id magic: it pairs well with any vegetable and can give life to extraordinary mixes with other spicy powders -although it may stain on clothes :). Its presence enhances the overall flavour and fragrance of the dishes.

COOKING TIPS: Protect your clothes!
I. Although yellow is a nice colour, you may not like it that much if it stains your kitchen walls, the sink or on your clothes! If that should happen, make sure to wash the surface immediately with water and soap!
II. According to some studies, black pepper combined with turmeric powder may help make the nutrients more easily available for the body to use.
Here is a general rule of thumb for cooking:
¼ teaspoon turmeric powder, ½ teaspoon olive oil, a pinch of black pepper
CULINARY TWIST: Keep calm and detox!
The best way to start the day off right? Having an energizing detox tea! All you need are 5 minutes of your time and a handful of ingredients that are already sitting on your pantry: 1 cup coconut water, 1 tsp ginger powder, 1/4 tsp organic turmeric powder, 1/4 cup lemon juice, 1 tbsp honey, salt and pepper to taste. Simply blend all ingredients in a mixer, add ice and serve with a straw. This is our first thing in the morning, for those days when you desperately need a pick-me-up. Healthy and ready in a blink of the eye, in short: perfection in a cup!
If you are a more experienced chef, turmerc falafels (vegan and gluten free) are a must-try! To make 18 balls, you need: 3 tbsp organic brown flaxseed, 1 small onion, 1 1/2 cup drained organic chickpeas, 2 cloves garlic crashed, 1/4 cup nutritional yeast, 1/4 cup parsley, 1/4 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp paprika and 1/4 tsp organic turmeric powder. Before you start, preheat your oven to 350 F. Line a baking sheet with baking paper and set aside.In a blender, process flaxseed until powdered. Add in your onion, and pulse. Then, incorporate chickpeas and garlic. Blend until smooth, add all the remaining ingredients, and pulse until well combined. Shape the mixture into balls – as little as you like. Bake the balls in the oven for 20-30 minutes. Once golden and crispy on the outside, remove from the oven, let them cool and serve or refrigerate in an airtight container. You will have no choice but make a second batch!

Turmeric powder has been used as a spice, and medicinal herb for over 5000 years. In South Asian cuisine, turmeric has been very popular as a food colourant, because of its vivid hue, as well as used as a food preservative, and for seasoning. It is often referred to as ""Indian saffron"" due to its yellow-orange brilliant colour, which is reminiscent of saffron.
